Just the phrase “energy deregulation” is enough to make the average consumer’s head spin. In the simplest terms, for energy customers it means a choice in energy providers. As the top marketers like to say, “the gold is in the list.” When you have a targeted, responsive opt-in mailing list, you can contact those folks periodically with updates, tips and information about your products. Once people come to know and trust you as a provider of quality information or entertainment, they are much more likely to buy your products and services.

The most effective way to build an opt-in list is to offer people something of value in exchange for their email address. Authors and publishers usually give away items such as ebooks, special reports, sample book chapters, instructional videos, teleseminars or mini-courses via email. 

There are quite a few things to consider before you choose to pay out of pocket for a list of subscribers. There are many offers on the Internet that provide lists of countless email addresses, yet the option to purchase one should be carefully thought over before doing so. It sounds like an easy way to build your list, yet should you do it this way? Before answering lets look at a few considerations.

First and foremost is the question of how the lists were generated. Was it done legitimately can be difficult to justify. This can lead to enormous difficulties for the online business owner. Do you want to build a list of a million people who will never purchase a single item? That is known as an act of futility! You want a list of subscribers who will buy your products, there is no way to ensure that will happen by a randomly generated list of a multitude of names.

The creation of a successful list depends entirely on the relevance your product in question to the subscribers needs. You want to control the information being offered, ensure it is being offered to prospective buyers interested in the actual product. By allowing someone else to collect email addresses for you, you have lost control of just who the recipients of your message will be. Typically leads are generated for anonymous list by offering the opportunity to make easy money. If you are selling a course on product creation, a person on the random list may have no interest or knowledge of how to use that product, and furthermore will not understand the manner in which you received their information.

The security of your online business and your position should be the first thought that is always in your mind. When you buy bulk emails, you are setting yourself up for possible disaster. The barrage of spam complaints will lead to the loss of your Internet service provider, without which you cannot continue to operate. It will also cause the hosting company to drop you as a bad investment. You have utterly no way to verify the “clean list” of email addresses being offered is authentic. Nothing is worth the risk of losing your business over.

There is only one exception to the above; that is a list of leads purchased from an established company that specialize in lead generating, and for this specialty you can expect to pay a vast deal more than the standard $20 for a million unverified leads, more like $1 per email address. This will pay off for those who have the resources to assemble such list, usually not for the new online business. When you can afford it, it will be a worthwhile expense, just be sure to check out their legitimacy as a company first.

It is always best to build your own list. Use your marketing skills, establish a relationship with your subscribers they can trust and your list will evolve based entirely on your efforts. Shortcuts lead to short results, go for the sustainable results, and gain a sustainable earnings foundation.
